Liberty Harbor Academy Preparing kids for the way the world is, not the way it used to be Fri, 12 Dec 2014 20:15:01 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Liberty Harbor Academy Christmas Raffle Fri, 12 Dec 2014 19:20:45 +0000 Are you a fan of the New England Patriots?  Do you know someone who is?  Have you ever wished you could combine your love for sports with your concern for education?

Liberty Harbor has acquired a set of collector’s items just in time for Christmas.  By entering the raffle below, you will be entered in the running for the two items pictured on the right.  The winning ticket will be drawn on December 19th at noon – the last day of school for Liberty Harbor Academy’s Fall term.  You will be notified by email and we can coordinate the best way to get your prize to you at that point.

First, the framed picture with inscription of Rob Gronkowski making a touchdown during a Patriot victory over the Kansas City Chiefs as Derrick Johnson reclines on the sideline.  It is behind glass and ready to hang on a wall.  (The display stand is not included.)

Second, and the one that really makes this awesome, is a Patriot’s mini-helmet (i.e. do not try to actually put this on) signed by Gronk himself!  And in case your friends don’t believe you, there is a certificate of authenticity in the display case.

In entering the raffle, you are supporting Liberty Harbor Academy and its mission.  Purchasing tickets are as easy as entering the form below and paying through PayPal.  Once your payment goes through and we have registered your “tickets” we will send you an email confirming that fact.  All proceeds go towards the operation of the school.

Tickets are being sold for $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00, and clearly the second option is the way to go.  Please remember that if you order them by the pair, when you enter the quantity you would like, you will be receiving twice that number in actual raffle tickets.

Sorry. This form is no longer available.

The classical orders of Greek and Roman columns inform both the environment and the academics at LHA!

Liberty Harbor is not just a school, it is a whole environment. To that end, a new Board of Trustees member, Julie LeDoux, is going to be working with us on Wednesday through Friday of this week to help figure out better ways of arranging our space. As many of you know, one of the major challenges is simply storage space. Creativity is demanded to make the best use of our space.

If you have been interested in helping out at Liberty Harbor, want to find out more, or just have an interesting intellectual conversation (you never know what will come up in the halls of LHA), let us know to expect you and we will appreciate your helping hands Wednesday through Friday.  We don’t have a strict schedule at the moment, so the more warning you can give us the better.

There will be cleaning, imagining, and rearranging, so the more hands the better.  And there is really no better opportunity to find out more regarding Liberty Harbor on account of the close interaction between environment, architecture, and academics.  You will leave having had a mini-class on spatial arrangements.

We hope to see you there!

Financial Aid meetings Mon, 23 Jun 2014 10:47:27 +0000 The Liberty Harbor Board of Trustees is becoming far more active than it has in the past. With Steve Mathieu at the helm, they are using their financial expertise to assess student financial aid, much as a college would do.

Every penny counts!

If you are interested in coming to Liberty Harbor, and you have already filled out a Preapp, the next step is to fill out FACTS (read more on the Application Process page) which is our Tuition Management system.  If you are expecting to need Financial Aid, your next phone call should be to call Legacy Financial Solutions at (603) 647-7166 to set up an appointment pending the FACTS Aid Assessment results.

This process is designed to be an objective view of the family’s ability to afford Liberty Harbor, and to work out what is possible in terms of financial aid.  Jean Esslinger, our Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, is excellent when it comes to financial strategies and tactical thinking.

We know that most educational loans are geared towards college level education, and so Mrs. Esslinger will work with families to creatively come up with solutions that work for everyone.

Liberty Harbor Protects the American Dream Thu, 04 Jul 2013 18:14:57 +0000

US Flag

A beautiful flag

How do we rescue the American Dream?  What does it mean to be an American citizen?  It is much more than entitlements, amnesty, and political correctness.  It is also more than paying taxes and voting.  The American Dream is built on a foundation of virtue—actually several virtues, among them, integrity, honor, and self-discipline.  These are in short supply as we assess results of our public education in the last decades.

Today, there is a concerted effort to wipe out classical American virtues through a re-education of the American people.  As my students know, it does not take more than three generations to change a culture—and we are almost there.  Thomas Paine wrote that “virtue is not hereditary” it must be modeled and taught anew to each generation. As we become tone deaf to tradition we will no longer be able to hear the voices of the past, the present—or of the future.  We abandon the education of civic and moral virtues at great peril.  It is time to wake up and re-establish our cultural traditions.

Taking back our traditions means rejecting any attempt to undermine our national character, civic and moral virtues, and liberty for self-government.  It means emphasizing restraint, virtue, self-improvement, and a work ethic because a people who cannot support themselves are doomed to slavery.  It means rekindling Washington’s “sacred fire of liberty” to light the way to a renewal of the self-evident truths that we are all entitled to “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”.

The Declaration of Independence

On this our nation’s 237th birthday, Liberty Harbor promises to stand against the erosion of our culture.  We pledge, as did the signers of the Declaration of Independence, “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor” to provide the education necessary to protect the American Dream.  Will you stand with us?

By re-educating, not only the present generation but the last as well, in the American virtues of self-reliance, self-discipline, and civility in the service of America, we will loose the shackles of indoctrination and march again with the torch of liberty held high.   Come with us!

Happy Birthday Liberty Harbor Academy!

Happy Birthday United States of America!

What Really Works for Long-Term Learning? Fri, 03 May 2013 07:30:22 +0000 Stop highlighting!  Likewise, no more underlining, rereading, summarizing, or cramming for tests!  Research shows that these study techniques are just not useful when used by themselves.  But if these typical strategies don’t work, what does?  Well, Liberty Harbor knows and has long known, and developed a Spiral Education for this very reason.  The education gurus call one aspect of Spiral Education ‘distributive learning.’  This means that learning should be stretched out over a longer period of time, distributed, dipping into material at intervals of time.  The longer the intervals and the more repetition, the longer material will ‘stay learned.’  A second learning method, ‘practice testing’ is rated as high-utility as well.  This means using frequent quizzes and tests requiring the recall of information which strengthens “knowledge and aids in future retrieval” says Anne Murphy Paul in her article “Highlighting is a Waste of Time: The Best and Worst Learning Techniques.”  Liberty Harbor and Spiral Education are already teaching this way.  Why not contact us today?

American Dream Award 2013: Cliff Hurst Tue, 30 Apr 2013 23:58:15 +0000 Cliff Hurst - American Dream

Join us for the inaugural American Dream Award Presentation

In the poem The New Colossus, engraved on a bronze plaque and mounted inside the lower level of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, poet Emma Lazarus concludes with the line, “I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”  The founders of Liberty Harbor Academy could not imagine a more fitting name for a school that strives to prepare students to seize opportunity when presented, and to create opportunity as they see fit.  It is with these abilities that our young people will work towards their American dream.

As we educate our students, we seek to find role models who, by their work ethic, optimism, and commitment to community, demonstrate the attributes needed to make dreams a reality.  Each year our school selects one such role model to receive our American Dream Award.  His or her name is engraved on a name-plate and secured to our Statue of Liberty plaque, which will be displayed in the school’s lobby.

Honoring 2013 recipient,

Cliff Hurst
