Liberty Harbor Academy is a new and different concept of high school designed for the student who the traditional academic model does not fit.  It is a traditional liberal arts college education in your typical high school years.

Program Highlights

Critical Thinking

We do not indoctrinate students at Liberty Harbor Academy. We give them the necessary tools to enable them to come to reasoned decisions and make responsible choices. Critical thinking does not mean negative arguments, rather through intelligent and informed questions a student is able to get to the truth of any subject.

Independent, Non-Profit

Since the concept for LHA is a completely different way to consider education, the founders have decided not to obligate the school to a set of rules and regulations that have tended to stifle the education process and tie the hands of teachers and administrators. (For example: We will not rely on standardized tests or regulatory testing schedules that force teachers to “teach to the tests”.)

Hybrid British/American System

The British education is a tutorial relationship with an individual professor responsible for the education of each student. Students at LHA will be grouped in cohorts of 12 to 14 students who will work with their professor from entrance to graduation. This way the students are guaranteed that they will receive individualized attention.

Classical Liberal Arts Education

Students will not focus on learning from textbooks and secondary sources but will read and discuss the primary sources on which culture is based. Some classes, such as math and science, will use a mixture of primary sources and textbooks.

Disciplined Environment

Young people rise to the level of expectation. In order to have the freedom to explore intellectually, they must have safe boundaries where they are assured of a consistent environment. Consistently enforced rules with consequences allow students to experience the ‘real world’ without severe risk.

Etiquette/Social Training

Manners and etiquette usage is the method by which people living in a society show respect for others, especially strangers. The number one response of corporate HR people when asked what is missing from college graduates is social graces. Graduates from LHA will know how to present themselves, speak clearly, spell, write, and think. In addition, they will understand levels of authority and personal responsibility.

Work Study Mandatory

After the first or second year (depending on age and maturity) students of the Program begin working internships at local corporations. These internships, based on the Christo Rey model, will not only provide years of work experience but will also help to pay student’s tuition. Therefore, once the student begins the corporate job, tuition costs will drop to approximately 60% of the initial year(s).

Rule of 150

The student body will never grow larger than about 150 students for a very important reason called “the Rule of 150.”  Sociologists tell us that the human mind is comfortable interacting with somewhere around 150 people.  Beyond that number we have a hard time keeping up the relationships.  After that size, the group tends to fragment into sub-groups and factions.  For this reason, we have made the decision to keep enrollment small by public school numbers and concentrate on giving each student the individual attention required.
